Roanoke held an overdose-awareness vigil Wednesday night

WDBJ reports the city held a vigil Wednesday night for International Overdose Awareness Day. The Virginia Department of Health counted almost 1,200 overdose deaths in the state in 2025. First responders told the station they still want Narcan in houses before the ambulance.

VTC medical school cuts in-state tuition by $15,000 a year

The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors approved a $15,000-a-year cut in the in-state tuition rate at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke — 23.4 percent below the nonresident rate — starting this fall. The university says $6.5 million a year in new state operating money is what makes a resident rate possible. The school wants about half of each class to be Virginians.

Former mayor asks City Hall to deny a casino link to the Hotel Roanoke sale

The Roanoke Rambler reports former Mayor David Bowers wants city leaders to deny, on the record, that dissolving the Hotel Roanoke Conference Center Commission is a step toward a casino at the hotel. The city has an NDA with an unnamed casino developer who has paid Roanoke $75,000 on a Berglund entertainment-district pitch. The Rambler says it found no public document tying the hotel sale to that developer — and asks City Hall to say so out loud.

I-81 blasting this week: slow rolls between 143 and 150

Roanoke County says blasting on the I-81 widening in Roanoke and Botetourt counties is on for Wednesday and Thursday this week, 9 to 11 a.m., inside an eight-week window through late October. Northbound slow rolls start at the 146 on-ramp; southbound at 156 in Troutville. Each pause can run about 15 minutes. Pack patience, not a new route through someone's driveway.

Roanoke City Public Schools says a Round Hill Elementary kindergartner who is listed as a car rider got on a bus Aug. 20 and was dropped at Westwind Apartments. The Roanoke Rambler reports the leasing office called the school about 17 minutes after the drop-off; the district says it investigated, is taking personnel action, and is working with contractor Zum on boarding procedures. We are not naming the child.

Daleville blasting for Project GVO is coming. The letters missed some front yards.

WSLS reports Carolina Drilling told Daleville and Troutville residents that controlled blasting for Project GVO starts in mid-September, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is expected to last at least a year. Neighbors next to the site say they did not get the letter; wells are the worry. The contractors did not comment on camera.

The Roanoke Rambler reports a spring Canvas attack attributed to ShinyHunters hit Roanoke City and Roanoke County schools, exposing names, emails, student IDs, and message histories. RCPS told the School Board this week it has layered email filters, endpoint software, and an audit of cameras and other devices on the network. Dolly's Imagination Library is still mailing books in Roanoke

Roanoke City Public Libraries and the Junior League of the Roanoke Valley say they will keep Dolly Parton's Imagination Library going here after her death Tuesday. Roanoke police say officers were called about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to the 400 block of 4th Street, where an argument ended in a stabbing. WSLS reports the victim was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with injuries police said were not life-threatening. A man is in custody.

Salem police charge a Roanoke County man after an assault that ended in a Roanoke barricade

Salem police said a 59-year-old Roanoke County man was charged with multiple felonies, including malicious wounding, strangulation, and abduction, after an assault they say began in the 1200 block of W. Main Street in Salem early Aug. 19. The city said Roanoke officers later took him into custody at a residence without further incident.
